Places: Routine and Favorite

Here is a photo of the shop featuring what is commonly provided at cafes in Spain!

The one place that has become part of my daily routine is to stop into a coffee shop called 365 on my way to the metro stop each morning before classes. Although this is a chain in Barcelona, and I prefer to frequent small locally owned businesses, the sandwiches and pastries are always fresh, and they make really good cortados – a traditional Spanish version of an espresso shot with cream – which is why it has truly become a staple for my daily routine. What surprised me the most about this coffee shop and many others in this city is that they have juicers along with their coffee machines to make fresh squeezed orange juice and occasionally other types! I am a huge fan of fresh juice as I would make my own at home in Wisconsin, so it has really been a refreshing surprise to be able to pick up a fresh juice whenever I want! Since the neighborhood I live in has quite a few new residence halls (or dorms), the staff at 365 have gotten to know a lot of us foreign students and help us with specific vocabulary and practicing our conversational Spanish.

Here is a photo of me that some of my friends took while having a sunset picnic at the bunkers!

My favorite place in the city so far has been a place called “the bunkers” by locals. It is located on top of a hill overlooking the cityscape and is a place where all types of locals and travelers visit to hang out, talk, and watch the sunset. Many people pack food for a picnic or simply something to drink and share with friends. This is my favorite spot I have found in the city not only because of the fantastic view but because the atmosphere is so positive, and I have met so many people from around the world as friends mingle and we all enjoy the view and sunset together. I recommend anyone visiting Barcelona to take the time to do the hike; it’s truly a beautiful sight and the energy is welcoming and fun!

My interest in international business compels me to build cultural connections and understand how multiculturalism impacts businesses in our globalized world. Barcelona is known for its unique blend of Spanish and Catalonian culture and as a “travel hub”, attracting a wide range of people. I think it will be a relevant and exciting environment for me to build an appreciation – and perhaps skill – for bridging cultures both professionally and socially. For this reason, I believe the Barcelona Business and Culture program structure and offerings can provide me with the appropriate opportunities, education, and connections to support this goal.
