Program: UW Chemical & Biological Engineering Summer Lab in Spain, Summer

Aly’s major: Chemical Engineering

Me at the Lagos de Covadonga in the Picos de Europa National Park

What was your most memorable experience on your program?

My most memorable experience from my program was going to the Lagos de Covadonga and the Picos de Europa National Park! It was so beautiful and really fun to hike up into the mountains with the cows. We were able to spend the day there and take in all the amazing views.

Manage your time well and take every opportunity to explore Oviedo and the rest of the Asturias region! The lab is intense but it is possible to still have time to explore with friends if you use your time well!

How were your program academics similar or different from taking classes at UW–Madison?

The lab was very comparable to CBE 324 but in a much more condensed format. It was a very heavy workload due to the short duration of the lab. We had two full days in lab to complete the experiment and then two weekdays to complete the report. Each lab had a different assigned professor that would guide you through the lab and answer any questions which was a bit different than 324 lab.

What is your advice for someone considering your program?

Manage your time well and take every opportunity to explore Oviedo and the rest of the Asturias region! The lab is intense but it is possible to still have time to explore with friends if you use your time well! I would recommend trying to get as much of your lab reports done during the week so you can have free time on the weekends. Definitely go on all the weekend trips the Spanish professors plan and take the time to try local restaurants!
