Spain: Riley Lynch (Daily Life in Seville)

During my internship, I quickly got accustomed to my daily routine. Each day, teaching would take place from 4 to 10 pm, so I had plenty of time in the morning to run my errands and explore the city.

The sunset I always saw at my metro stop at the end of a day teaching.
The sunset I always saw at my metro stop at the end of a day teaching.

I would usually begin the day around 9 or 10 am when I would wake up and make myself some breakfast. Spain had a surprisingly vast selection of cereals that I was eager to try! After breakfast, I would either complete items off my to-do list, like grocery shopping, finding a new book to read, or lesson planning, or if that was all done, then I would choose a spot in the city to explore for the morning. The Cathedral and surrounding shopping streets were frequent destinations. Coming back home, I would spend the extra time before teaching ensuring that my lesson plan was complete and then I would work on readings for the required class, International Studies 523.

Once at the academy, I had a different class or appointment each hour. Often, I would teach two or three classes in one day, prepare for English proficiency exams with students for another hour or two, and have an hour of working on the online platform the academy was making. I loved the hustle and bustle of the students coming and going, and as connections with students and staff were formed, catching up on each other’s day was quickly incorporated into the routine.

On the metro home, the other intern and I would reflect on moments from the day that brought us joy and get off at our stop just in time for the sunset. Once at home, we would make dinner, relax, and go to bed for another exciting day to start the next morning.

Hometown: Black Earth, Wisconsin

Major: Social Work; English

Program: English Social Club (ESC) English Language Teaching Internship

I chose this program because of how interested I am in Spanish culture and how the internship will provide me with a lot of exposure and practice in teaching English. I am excited to develop into a more confident teacher and acquire effective TESOL methods as well as improve my Spanish language skills.
