One place that has become part of my daily routine is Parque Retiro. Parque Retiro is a massive park on the eastern side of Madrid, and it offers countless walking paths, biking trails, a beautiful pond, and café stands on every turn. I love having the opportunity to discover every hidden gem of Retiro, specifically the sculptures throughout the park, the botanical gardens, the small bridges, and the amazing variety of trees, flowers, and animals. I specifically enjoy going on long runs and people-watching as hundreds of people flow in and out of Retiro every day. Living in Madrid and being in such proximity to Retiro has taught me the importance of green space and central parks in Spanish culture. They offer a gathering place for Spaniards to meet, converse, spend time with each other, and enjoy the sun and nature. I have grown a deep appreciation for this custom, and plan on trying to explore and spend more time at the parks nearby me when I return to the United States.
However, as much as I love Parque Retiro, my favorite part of Madrid is Templo Debod. Templo Debod is an Egyptian temple saved during the construction of the Assuan Dam, and a present given to Spain by Egypt. Debod is at the bottom of Parque del Oeste and lies right at the most beautiful overlook over the entire Madrid skyline. Templo Debod was one of the first places I went to when I arrived in Madrid, and it has a special place in my heart for being one of my first impressions of the city. From Templo Debod, you can see the most stunning sunsets and views of all the lights and views of Madrid. It truly is an unforgettable sight.

One reason I chose my program is because of the incredible opportunity to take classes fully in Spanish at Unviersidad Complutense in Madrid. I want to learn all about Spanish culture and traditions and enhance my Spanish conversational skills.
