At the University of Oviedo, the lab facilities were impressive in their scale, requiring us to don white lab coats just like we would at UW-Madison. However, there was a unique twist—all the equipment was in Spanish! From the Spanish keyboards to the software, it was a full immersion into the language (outside of the lab, which was in English). Practicing Spanish was one of my goals this summer, and boy, did I get to do this!

Despite the bulk of our time being spent in the lab, the real learning extended far beyond the classroom. Since I was eager to practice my Spanish, the everyday experiences of dining and socializing offered abundant opportunities. While many people in Oviedo did speak English, the majority of locals preferred to converse in Spanish. This was where my language skills really came into play.

I became adept at navigating various situations—whether it was asking for a table, requesting to sit outside, ordering coffee, or inquiring about gluten-free options. These real-life interactions provided a valuable complement to the technical Spanish I was learning in the lab.

In essence, while the lab itself was conducted in English, the experience offered a dynamic way to enhance my Spanish skills in everyday contexts, making me a better Spanish speaker!

I want to expand professionally and personally by engaging with the locals and taking in the rich components of Spain! It is such an honor to be able to take part in a program overseas.

I’m most looking forward to seeing what the locals do day to day! I love the different lifestyle present in Spain, and I am so excited to immerse myself in their culture!
