When I think back on my summer in Oviedo, Spain, I’m flooded with memories that I know will stick with me forever. From the warm hospitality of the locals to the charm of the city itself, every moment was unforgettable. The program was an enriching blend of fascinating history, delicious food, immersive language practice, and, most importantly, the incredible friendships I formed.
If I could offer one piece of advice to anyone considering studying abroad, it would be this: “For the love of all things good—do it. It’ll change your life.” My time in Oviedo was a mere five weeks, and while I wished it could have lasted longer, maybe the brief duration is part of what made it so special.
The program was unique in that it brought together 12 students from UW-Madison and 8 from the University of Iowa. This created a built-in community of fellow students with whom I could share the experience. Even though we weren’t all incredibly close, it was easy to find a small group to explore the city with. I was lucky to have bonded with a close-knit group of five. We often enjoyed meals together outside of campus and made time for coffee breaks and little treats between our study sessions.

I want to expand professionally and personally by engaging with the locals and taking in the rich components of Spain! It is such an honor to be able to take part in a program overseas.
I’m most looking forward to seeing what the locals do day to day! I love the different lifestyle present in Spain, and I am so excited to immerse myself in their culture!
